For me, cancer made me question everything. Even the confidence in my abilities.
I remember I would avoid photos, slink into the background of group pictures and really almost avoid any attention.
I was a shell of who I once was, that is for sure.
Having difficulties due to chemo brain didn’t help either.
I thought I would never learn anything new or retain information.
I thought I wouldn’t be able to perform at work to the same ability I used to.
I was the last person to believe in myself and that I could start my own business and now have the ability to speak in front of large audiences without skipping a beat.
That may not be your goal and that’s quite alright. Whatever made you click on this page
Without self confidence “A low self-esteem can reduce the quality of a person's life in many different ways, including: Negative feelings – the constant self-criticism can lead to persistent feelings of sadness, depression, anxiety, anger, shame or guilt. Researchers found that low self-esteem had an association with anxiety, depression, academic stress, and suicidal thoughts. Low confidence may lead people to make negative decisions about how they treat themselves or let others treat them. People may also make unhealthy choices or avoid situations and withdraw.”
As if us survivors needed one more thing to allow those negative thoughts to creep back in, right?!?
So why does it ultimately matter for you?
Why Confidence Matters: Confidence helps us feel ready for life's experiences. When we're confident, we're more likely to move forward with people and opportunities — not back away from them. And if things don't work out at first, confidence helps us try again.
Self confidence can be a anecdote to anxiety, here’s why: Knowing you excel at something and being proud of yourself is different from being boastful, vain, and arrogant. Arrogance doesn’t benefit or serve you. Often, it’s just a way of overcompensating for insecurities or flaws—a display for others. On the other hand, authentic, healthy self-confidence has positive effects such as:
- Less worrying that you’re not good enough
- Better energy and performance
- Improved engagement with others and healthier relationships
- Deeper empathy for others and awareness of their feelings
- Greater willingness to try new things
- Enhanced resilience
